My name is Cassandra Tan. I am a 30-year-old Malaysian ceramicist based in Melbourne, Australia. I have seven years of experience in ceramics—primarily focused on wheel throwing—of which I have spent the past six years of working professionally within the ceramics industry. Over the last four years, I have been running my own pottery teaching studio, where I guide others in developing their own creative practices.

My practice is grounded in wheel-thrown, functional ceramics that honour form, tradition, and craftsmanship. Rooted in a deep respect for material and process, my work explores the quiet elegance of utility and the expressive perseverance found in repetition and refinement. Through each vessel, I seek a balance between function and artistry—objects that invite daily use while embodying the rhythms of making. Below is a curated selection of my most recent works.

Over the past year, as my business has grown and reached a point of stability, I’ve been able to step back and reconnect with my personal ceramic practice. This has led me to actively pursue both local and international opportunities to expand my skills and creative expression. I’ve recently completed two residencies in Icheon, Korea, where I focused on Eastern wheel throwing techniques and traditional Korean forms.
These experiences have directly inspired my current project, The 500 Hangari Project—a practice of repetition and refinement through the creation of 500 Hangari vessels. Each piece becomes a canvas for surface decoration that reflects my time in Korea, everyday observations, Melbourne culture, pop culture, and a range of ceramic techniques. Through this project and future residencies, I hope to continue evolving my practice by bridging cultural traditions with contemporary expression.
